7 make-up tips for date night!

Our Industry experts have given their 7 top-tips for you to  create a sexy, unforgettable look that will captivate your date, here are 7 summer beauty tips for date night… to help you out!

1. USE A LIGHTWEIGHT OIL FREE MAKEUP PRIMER

I know its tempting to skip a makeup primer ladies but it’s the secret to keeping your makeup from disappearing. Apply primer after you use a moisturizer and before your makeup foundation. A useful summer makeup tip is to to apply an extra layer to greasy-prone areas like your nose and forehead.

2. LAYER YOUR EYE MAKEUP

Eye makeup is one of the first things affected by heat. Give your eye shadow a base to cling to by applying eye primer to your eyelids. A top summer makeup tip is to apply a powdered eye shadow over a cream eye shadow for long-lasting durability. Hot eye shadows that are all the rage include sea-side inspired hues like sandy brown, emerald, champagne and turquoise blue.

3. LIQUID EYE LINER

Create captivating cat eyes with liquid eyeliner because it won’t smudge and disappear with the heat. Add a vivid burst of color to your eyes with eyeliner shades like ocean blue, aqua, lavender or mint green. Or use metallic silver, gold or bronze eyeliner if you want a glam look. A helpful summer makeup tip for novice liquid eyeliner girls is to use gel eyeliner because it’s so much easier to work with.

4. GEL BLUSH

Use gel blush instead of powder blush because it lasts longer. One great summer beauty tip is to use blush shades like bright pink, peach or coral to give your face a sexy I-just-ran-a-mile-on-the-beach flushed appearance. Dab a bit on your fingertip. Smile and gently rub the gel blush on the apples of your cheeks. Remember to blend the color in because you don’t want to look like that creepy puppet from the Saw movie that had those bright red swirls on his cheeks!

5. LIP STAINS

Tempt your date to lock lips by wearing lip stains in wine, coral, cherry crush or strawberry pink shades. Use a nourishing lip balm and let it set for a few minutes. Apply the lip stain with your finger and let it dry. Then add another layer of lip balm.

6. PACK MINI HAIR ESSENTIALS IN YOUR PURSE

Don’t leave home without mini essentials that can help you maintain gorgeous tresses all evening. Pack a couple of bobby pins or a hair elastic that matches your hair color in your purse. If you notice your hair lacking volume as the evening progresses, twist slightly damp hair into a cute chignon and use bobby pins or the hair elastic to secure. Rock the dance floor for awhile then when you finish, remove the bobby pins or hair elastic. Flip your head over a few times and voila! Instant waves that are pretty and full of volume!

7. ILLUMINATING POWDER

Finally, a dusting of Illuminating powder on your forehead, nose, cheekbones and chin will make you look like a summer goddess. It’s light reflective properties brightens any color skin tone, enhances your facial features and helps to conceal skin imperfections. Use illuminating powder to make your skin glow and your date won’t be able to keep his eyes off you.

There you go ladies! Those are our favorite top summer beauty tips for date night that will make you totally babelicious! Do you have any you would like to share? Feel free to post any tips below.

Whitney Port’s Make-Up Bag!

Brown Sugar had the pleasure of looking after Miss Whitney Port while she was visiting our Emerald Isle to promote Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model, with the ever so handsome Tyson Beckford.

Whitney nicely tweeted us her delight for looking after her hair & make-up for her Xposé feature.

Miss Port had the most amazing skin-tone for our make-up artists to work on! She is such a natural beauty, we had to find out what her daily beauty must-haves are! Luckily one of our favourite UK magazines ‘Company’, had a good rummage through and reported back. Here is what they found…

Lucas Paw Paw Ointment – it’s an Australian brand and is perfect for chapped lips and dry skin.

Trish McEvoy Lipgloss – This moisture treatment formula combines sexy color and SPF with a high-shine finish.

Shu Uemera’s eyelash curlers.

Le Labo Ambrette 9 fragrance. They make it in the USA at Barney’s and print the label then and there with your name on it and when you bought it, neat!

Vaseline.

What about the hair? Whitney uses a leave-in conditioner by an American brand called ‘It’s A 10’ and she also loves Morrocanoil products too.

Olympic Hair!

In need of some gym hairspiration? Check out how the Olympians do their ‘dos before competing in the biggest workout of their lives – London 2012!

Gorgeous Team GB cyclist Victoria Pendleton’s sleek brown ponytail, we rocked this look for our A/W 2011 campaign, you can’t go wrong with this!

Ashleigh Brennan of Australia wears her hair in a pretty bun whilst competing in the vault during gymnastics.

GB Heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson wore her long, voluminous locks tied back in a low pony whilst competing

Okay, she’s not an athlete but we couldn’t resist including this pic of Kate Middleton looking sporty, besides those gorgeous loose curls! Hair (and hubby) envy…

Angelique Kerber of Germany rocks a chunky plait and visor to keep her locks under control on the tennis court!

All of these styles are perfect for having gorgeous looking tresses while you hit the gym, and they are easy to achieve too. Don’t worry if you get the style a little messy, it will add to your over all look. Give one a try on your next workout, a report back to us with your thoughts.

Tousled Hair

We mentioned before how poker straight styles are coming back this season, but with the promise of some weekend sun, we thought you might prefer something a little more disheveled for that beachy effect. Relaxed beach hair looks and tousled tresses have been one of the hottest trends to sport in 2012.

Whether you’re searching for expert hair tips to ensure your tousled waves last all day or want to know which spray products will inject texture, our industry insiders and top hair stylists have shared their best tips and tricks to help you tick off the tousled hair trend.

1: PREP HAIR IN THE SHOWER

It may seem counterintuitive to clean hair before tousling, but prepping hair in the shower with products will help add moisture and minimize frizz.

2: APPLY PRODUCT

Towel-dry hair, then if you have wavy or curly hair, spritz with spray gel to help set your natural curls. Try L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL TECNI ART PLAY BALL BEACH FIZZ.

For straight or fine hair, comb a large dollop of volumizing mousse through wet hair.

For medium to thick hair, apply styling cream to help control flyaways and finger comb it through the hair for even application.

3: BLOW DRY HAIR

Flip your hair, then with a diffuser dry your hair until it’s 85 percent dry. Don’t touch your hair too much while drying, you want to ‘get in and get out,’ touching it often will create more frizz.

4: FOR SHORT HAIR:

Step 1: Using a small round brush, blow dry sections of hair and roll the brush away from your face.
Step 2: With a 3/4-inch curling iron, wrap 1-inch sections of hair from mid-shafts to ends only (leave the roots straight). Curl random sections of hair in different directions to create a more haphazard, rough texture.
Step 3: Gently tousle your hair with your hands to break up the curls.

5: FOR MEDIUM-LENGTH HAIR:

Step 1: Section your hair into 2-inch squares all over your head using zigzag lines to part. The zigzagged sections will help procure a more imperfect finish.
Step 2: With each section, apply a dollop of mousse through it and twist the strand to wind it into a tight mini bun. Secure with a hair pin. Create these mini buns throughout your head.

6: MEDIUM-LENGTH HAIR HOW-TO CONTINUED:

Step 3: Blast each mini bun with a blow dryer, until your hair is dry and the hair pins feel hot. This will take about 15 to 20 minutes. Let the buns cool down before removing the pins.
Step 4: If you feel your hair is too curly, use a medium-sized round brush and a blow dryer to smooth out the hair that frames your face and the top layer of your hair around your part. Make sure to direct the hair away from your face.
Step 5: With a 3/4-inch curling iron, wrap small sections of hair around the iron that are too straight or too curly. Just wrap from mid-shaft of the hair to the ends.
Step 6: Smooth a pea sized amount of styling wax on your waves to tame frizz and define strands. Tousle your hands through your hair as you apply.

7: FOR LONG HAIR:

Step 1: Take 2-inch sections of hair and spritz with a lightweight hairspray, then blow dry the section using a medium-sized round metal brush (we recommend using a metal brush because it heats up faster). Roll the hair up in the brush like it’s a hot roller and hold it there while blasting it with the blow dryer for a few seconds.
Step 2: Twist the brush as you unroll your hair then wrap the section of hair around your index and middle fingers. This will create a coil. Secure the coil to your scalp using a duckbill clip. Repeat steps one and two until all hair is secured into pin curls.
Step 3: Let your hair set in pin curls while you finish your morning routine (do your makeup, brush your teeth, etc.).
Step 4: Remove the clips and finish by gently tousling your hair with your hands to break up the curls, creating a more “lived in” look.

8: FINISHED LOOKS

Finish with a spritz of lightweight hairspray all over your hair. After following all the steps, you should be left with gorgeous tousled hair

Brown Sugar’s Elle.com Feature

As you may have seen Elle.com called upon Brown Sugar make-up artist Dearbhla Keenan to help recreate Anne Hathaway’s timeless make-up from ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ premiere to which she happily obliged.

If you didn’t catch the feature, here is how she did it.

With her gamine crop, porcelain skin, and doe-eyed makeup, Anne Hathaway was every bit as timeless as her Prabal Gurung gown. But at The Dark Knight Rises premiere, Anne gave her classic make-up a modern element with glossy, rose-tinged lips.

Make-up is all about enhancement and remembering that less is more – especially for a bridal look – so Anne’s fresh-faced make-up can be perfectly translated for the wedding day.

PRIMER: Use a primer to prep your skin to help achieve a long lasting base, especially for bridal make up, as it’s a long day.

FOUNDATION: Anne’s skin is matte but is still glowing, which is the preferred finish. To accomplish this I would recommend using ‘Kohl oil free matte foundation’, this will help prevent shine throughout your day. Once this is applied properly, i.e. with a professional foundation brush, it will not make you look heavily made up, which is the desired effect. This look is mostly seen worn on fairer skin but can still be effective on darker complexion.

Always use a translucent powder to set your base. Mac range of powders is generally a safe bet for most skin types whether it’s their blot powder or their studio fix range for a slightly heavier coverage.

GLOW: To create a glow on the skin, a mineralized bronzer is recommended to contour under the cheekbone, be cautious not to leave a lined effect, your soft blending is key. Subtle Pink blusher is applied to the apples of the cheeks. I always recommend smiling as you apply your blush, as it should only hit the fleshy part of cheek.

EYE SHADOW: Anne has kept very little emphasis on her eyes but still allows them to be a feature. This is done by lightly dusting an Ivory shadow (preferably matte) all over the eye area, always use a lash curler when wearing a neutral eye shadow as it will help to make the lash line more prominent

EYELINER: With a black or brown cake liner, press along the lash line with an angled brush. This is what keeps the liner soft and avoids strength while still creating definition.

MASCARA: Apply mascara heavily whilst also being very careful to avoid clumps. YSL Faux Lash Effect is a great mascara to give volume.

BROW: Eyebrows are a massive trend at the moment and this look is no different. For this season, try and let your brows grow out and then get them professionally groomed.
Threading or 3-D Brows ‘a seven step procedure that includes a variety of depilation techniques’ available in Brown Sugar, is a great way to achieve a perfect shape.
When you have accomplished a fuller eyebrow, use an angle brush to softly dust a brown eye shadow through the brow line to accentuate your brow shape.

LIPS: Finally, Anne’s lips are the piece de resistance; a rose coloured lipstick is applied softly, blotted (bite down on tissue for longevity) and applied again.

I recommend Kohl luxury lipstick shade Tea Rose, then a balm placed on top for moisture. Elizabeth Arden 8 hour balm is a popular choice as it nourishes lips whilst giving you an enticing pout.

This look will surely turn heads on your big day and help you feel like the movie star that you are.’

Kohl products are available to buy from Brown Sugar and can be ordered by phone.

Brown Sugar helps to raise €20,000 for the St. Francis Hospice

“Brown Sugar helps to raise €20,000 for the St. Francis Hospice. A cause very close to Brown Sugar’s heart”

On Sunday, 8th of July, the Managing Director of Brown Sugar, Mark O’Keeffe, presented a cheque for €20,000 to St. Francis Hospice, Raheny

The donation was amassed when Brown Sugar opened its doors on Sunday 13th May, in aid of the St. Francis Hospice, Raheny. The Hospice provides specialist palliative care for patients with advanced Cancer and Motor Neurone Disease, living in north Dublin city and county area.

The voluntary organisation under the care of the daughters of the St. Vincent De Paul also provides comprehensive care and supportive services to patients, their families and carers – without financial cost to the patients.

This is a cause very close to our heart’s, as it marked the one year anniversary since the loss of our dear friend and colleague Eugene O’Reilly to Cancer.

Today, Eugene is remembered as one of the most kindest, caring and giving people anyone has ever met, which his family, friends, colleagues and clients will all tell you. To say it was a pleasure to know Eugene would be an understatement.

To express our gratitude for the support that St.Francis Hospice provided to the O’Reilly family and every family, friend and patient they look after, we had hoped to raise €10,000 for this worthy cause. It is with great pleasure that we presented St. Francis Hospice with a cheque for €20,000! Double our target.

Brown Sugar MD Mark O’Keeffe and all of the Brown Sugar team would like to extend our gratitude to our loyal customers and sponsors, if it wasn’t for them we would not have reached this outstanding figure, which allows us to give back to the people whom provided a great deal of comfort to our nearest and dearest at a very trying time.

Mark O’Keeffe, MD of Brown Sugar: “I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everybody for giving up their Sunday, to come into our salons and creating an electric atmosphere with plenty of laughter and jokes to keep Eugene’s memory alive. We would love to make this an annual event”

Please see a list of all the sponsors involved in the St. Francis Hospice fundraiser:

Loulerie, Original Penguin, Coppinger Row, Deezer, Cactus Jacks, Costume, Barry McCall, Smock, Bagots Hutton, A|wear, The Morgan, Warner Bros, Green19, Pepper Pot Cafe, Cake Cafe, L’Oreal, Picture Rooms, Maria McGrail, Image Magazine, Irish Tatler, Juniors Restaurant, Laundry Room, Lisa Fitzpatrick, Farah.

Bold Brows!

With eyebrow attention still heavily on the rise, it was no shock to see such a focus on them at the AW12 shows. There was a mono-brow at Pam Hogg, thick brown ones at Burberry thanks to Wendy Rowe and even full beaded beauties at Chanel. With the introduction of the ‘Scouse Brow’ earlier this year, it is understandable, that some of you may be a tad nervous about your venture into the bold brows category, but trust us, we  tend to know just what our clients are going to love…! Which is why Brown Sugar offer 3D brows, a totally new definition in eyebrow shaping! It has a seven step procedure that includes a variety of depilation techniques for the perfect sculpted brows!

7 Reasons To Go Blonde!

Do blondes have more fun? We have seven great reasons, which may help you in your decision to take the plunge, and go BLONDE…

1: One great reason, is that there is most likely a color for you. Some people – both women and men – hesitate before lightening their hair because they’re afraid it won’t go with their coloring. It also has to be said that some color profiles don’t go with blond, but generally, you’ll find a flattering hue somewhere between strawberry blond and platinum.

2: Another great reason to go blond is the ‘versatility’. You can easily lighten your hair in a variety of ways. If you don’t want an all over color, think about highlights instead.

3:  If you want to add a little dazzle to your look, this is definitely one way to do it.

4: If you are looking for a style over-haul, going blonde is a sure way to achieve this! Opting for an all over colour, will make you feel like a whole new person, and give a new lease of life!

5: For those of you who aren’t fans, of your little ‘grey’ friends, going blonde is sure way to help you cover those up.

6: Going blonde, may help with really oilly hair, which you find problematic. Granted the bleach may have a lot to do with it, but as long as your hair doesn’t get unhealthy, your hair should be fine.

7: Trends, such as ballyage, are a great way to ultimately stop coloring your hair if you want to, at least when you naturally have darker hair. Your roots are much, much less noticeable, sometimes even undetectable, when the lower parts of the strand are blond. You get a steady, smooth gradation to blond, so it’s also a subtler way of trying the color.

Remember to always cosult a colour professional so you can see some examples and get a knowledgeable opinion, on whats best for your hair type.

Deciding To Change Your Hair

Can’t decide whether to cut your hair or keep it as it is? These tips may help you in your decision.

Get some inspiration. Buy some magazines and see what hairstyles are in and what celebrities are having their hair like. If you find a few styles you like, keep them in mind. Most of our customers, take inspiration from TV and magazine and the internet.

Your face shape. Certain styles look better with certain face shapes. like a short, pixie cut generally suits people with thinner faces. Go through the styles you liked in the magazines and see which ones would suit your face shape.

Using the internet. You can also go on to sites where you upload a picture of yourself and it will give you a number of hairstyles to choose from and it will show you how the style would suit your face and different colours. We are also huge fans of Pinterest, were we have a huge catalogue of hair and beauty images we adore, this may be of use to you when referring to tip 1. Check it out here

Colour? Are you bored with the same colour. If you would like to change your shade of hair as well as your style, consider what colour would suit you best. If you have very dark hair then it might be quite hard to maintain blonde hair and keep your roots from going back to your original colour. Think carefully about what method you use to colour your hair.

In Salon. I recommend that you take a picture of the way you want your hair cut. Describing what you want sometimes may confuse your hairdresser and you might end up with something you really didn’t want. Just take the picture and tell them you would like it like this.
